The “gozzo” and the world of “Small wooden Boats”

Small wooden boats and specially the “gozzo” are nearly all disappearing from our beaches and marinas. They have already disappeared from the market as it could progressively be noticed in boat shows. So, one could assume that a phenomenon proving irreversible is definitely irreversible, and that’s all. But when things come to a point when you say “for ever”, then you should also think that all this means precious old traditions should “definitely” disappear with it as well, making people forget about their history ad customs for good.

STORIE DI BARCHE and GALATA MUSEO DEL MARE do hope one thing, that our three carpenters may be able to take such an advantage of the know-how learned this way that they may also find out how to make it compatible with nowadays market requirements through some modern and clever solution to the problems involved.

Another idea cherished by STORIE DI BARCHE and GALATA MUSEO DEL MARE is that amongst all those people visiting the museum and happening to watch the construction of a wooden boat, there may be some of them realizing that building a boat should not be something out of reach for them. It needn’t strictly be a “gozzo” or a boat built exclusively according to traditional techniques, it might also simply be a boat which one could build himself. This means, however, that before starting the job for one’s dreamboat to come true, one should go through some reading on the subject, choose the most suitable drawing and construction plans and finally consider the costs implied in it. These points are all essentially meant to form the personality of anyone facing these problems, leading them at the same time to a deeper respect for the sea and to a wider knowledge of the art of sailing. This is why STORIE DI BARCHE, GALATA MUSEO DEL MARE are the right people who could achieve this ambitious target. Who ever said that the only way to face the great challenge of one’s idea of building and sailing one’s dream boat should exclusively stand up to the standards of the boats sailing for the America’s Cup watched on TV?
