Pieve Ligure

Particolare di un mezzo scafo

Where is Pieve Ligure? Somewhere along the coast of Golfo Paradiso, halfway the Riviera east of Genoa on the road leading to the headland of Monte di Portofino. Where is the sea at Pieve Ligure ? Somewhere down the cliffs where a few tiny bays allow boats to be launched after being carried down the steep lanes cutting through terraced olive groves perched far from the noisy beach life. The lovely old village of Pieve was built in the Middle Ages uphill on a spur wherefrom by a breathtaking view over the sea and the coast, the old inhabitants could efficiently watch out against the enemy’s vessels or welcome their own ships sailing for vital trades. How can one talk about Pieve Ligure without falling in love with the yellow dots of its mimosa trees blooming among those silvery olive groves in the crisp early February breeze as forerunners of glorious spring colours? Where else could a lively association such as “STORIE DI BARCHE” come up if not in a fairyland like Pieve Ligure, where the noise of a saw, a hammer, or a jack-plane belonging to old seamanship skills never stopped resounding ? This because the woods were near and the sea had always been bewitchingly inviting to try to make a fortune over the ocean and come back home in heaven for life.
